Angora is the ancient name of the city of Ankara and the surrounding Ankara Province (vilayet) in Turkey and the Ottoman Empire. Angora and Ankara are different spellings of the same word An --- which means beautiful and Gora, Gara, Kara, or Qara --- which means black. Ankara --- Beautiful Black. This city lent its name to several breeds of animals: Angora also refers to the hair of either the Angora goat or the Angora rabbit, or the fabric made from Angora rabbit; see Angora wool. (Fabric made from angora goat is mohair.)
